What is Uniswap (UNI)?
Uniswap (UNI) is the governance token of the Uniswap protocol, a decentralized exchange that launched on Ethereum and now runs on several other networks, letting people swap tokens directly from their own wallets. Instead of an order book, Uniswap uses automated market maker pools funded by liquidity providers. UNI is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, and it carries voting power in Uniswap governance, though that power only counts once you delegate it, to yourself or to someone else.
Uniswap lets people trade tokens without handing them to a company first. Instead of an order book matching buyers to sellers, it uses pools of tokens that anyone can fund, and trades settle straight from your own wallet.

How Uniswap works
- Anyone can create a liquidity pool for a pair of ERC-20 tokens.
- Liquidity providers deposit tokens into a pool and earn part of the fee on every trade that uses it.
- Most pools take both sides of the pair, though newer Uniswap versions let you supply a single token across a price range you choose.
- Trades settle directly from your own wallet, so you never hand custody to a company.
- Uniswap is permissionless, so any token can be listed – including low-quality and fraudulent ones.
What the UNI token does
- Holders vote through the Uniswap DAO on proposals such as protocol parameter changes and treasury spending.
- Voting power counts only once it is delegated, either to yourself or to another address.
- Holding UNI does not currently entitle you to a share of trading fees. Uniswap governance controls the fee settings and can change them.
- UNI does not grant ownership of Uniswap Labs, the company that builds the main web interface.
Risks to know before you buy UNI
- Governance tokens can lose value regardless of how heavily the protocol is used.
- Voting power concentrates among large holders and delegates.
- Regulation is unsettled: the SEC issued Uniswap Labs a Wells notice in April 2024 and closed that investigation without enforcement in February 2025, and a CFTC settlement followed in September 2024.
- Legal treatment of decentralized exchanges and governance tokens still differs by country.
- Smart contracts can contain bugs, and crypto prices are volatile.
How do I buy Uniswap (UNI)?
Coinmama has sold crypto since 2013 and serves more than 3.5 million users across 190+ countries. You can pay by credit card, debit card, bank transfer (SEPA or SWIFT), Apple Pay, or Google Pay, though the methods available depend on your country. Purchases are non-custodial: your UNI goes straight to a wallet address you provide, not to an account we hold for you. Support is available 24/7 at support@coinmama.com.
UNI is one of many cryptocurrencies you can buy from the same verified account. Because UNI is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum network, you need a small amount of Ethereum in the same wallet to cover gas fees whenever you move it. You can also look at Bitcoin, Wrapped Bitcoin, Aave, and Bitcoin Cash.
